Outbreak of E. coli Infections Linked to Romaine Lettuce from Salinas

Posted by:Maxime Cayer, Wednesday, November 27, 2019

Vegpro is committed to providing safe, healthy and quality produce. As such, we have been closely monitoring with the investigation into the multistate outbreak in the United States of E. coli 0157:H7 and would like to provide you an update on the developing situation.

The State of Maryland has linked a cluster of cases in that state to Ready Pac Foods Bistro Bowls Chicken Caesar Salad made with romaine from growers in the Salinas area. In Canada, the CFIA issued a Food Safety Warning relating to Bonduelle brand salads expiring Oct 31st 2019.

The CFIA continues to sample produce through its enhanced microbiological surveillance programs. Romaine lettuce and pre-packaged salads containing romaine lettuce are included within this surveillance program.

Given the indications that illnesses can be linked to product from the Salinas region, the FDA issued an update with an advisory to retailers and food service companies to stop selling and serving all types of romaine sourced from Salinas, California. In addition, consumers are also advised to avoid eating all types of romaine products grown in Salinas.

Vegpro has stopped all romaine sourcing in the Salinas region. We will be disposing of any Salinas raw in our possession out of an abundance of caution. At this time there is no indication that Vegpro products are linked to this outbreak. As this ongoing outbreak investigation moves forward, we will continue to closely monitor the situation and will share any new information as it becomes available.
